While Trump was showering praises on the secular wisdom of India, it’s ‘unity in disparity,’ and it’s ‘harmony of religious freedom’. The national capital ‘Delhi’ was apparently witnessing riots with streets burning down in addition to vandalism, arson, and robberies as the communal clashes took a precarious turn on Tuesday.
Many parts of North East Delhi faced mob violence, and gunshots were fired. Angry Hindu mobs resorted to violent actions as they rushed into Muslim-specific neighborhoods carrying iron bars and aluminum baseball bats. It was a riot between the pro-CAA and anti-CAA protestors, essentially Hindus & Muslims, respectively, which is said to have sparked off after a series of political insights for a few days. As President Trump was gracing the national capital on Tuesday discussing geopolitics, the communal violence on the other end of the city injured hundreds and killed more than 20 people. Those who have died are a mix of Hindus and Muslims.
Delhi Riots as much a policing issue as a communal issue.
Delhi Police, it seems, is to blame, as the situation went out of control in the National capital. As can be assumed from the flurry of videos and pictures floating around social media sourced by credible media houses, the Delhi Police, though present, was as good as not being there. Cars were set ablaze, stone pelting occurred between the two formed groups of Hindus and Muslims, and the areas across North East turned into battlegrounds. There were petrol bombs in possession of the protestors, and on the mere instances when the police intervened, they got attacked by acid-like substances and hot water. One Head constable has died after being hit by a brick on his head.
Pro CAA versus the Anti-CAA Clash gone worst
Since the Parliament passed the divisive Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), there has been immense unrest in the nation, which started from the North-Eastern states of India and spread to the National capital and other major cities. Particularly Muslims, in addition to college students, diplomats, human rights activists, and other Indians who considered CAA a threat to the Indian constitution, staged week’s long protests.
The anti-CAA protests also bore the repercussions of ‘Jamia University’ violence on students, allegedly, by the local Police. Many students in JNU, New Delhi, also faced attacks by some fellow students, in the wake of CAA protests. Extensive criticism and inquiries went into motion as the role of the Delhi Police and Government inaction was scrutinized.
Indian Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA)- Why Indians Are Against It?
‘Shaheen Bagh’ became resolute for nonviolent protestors who have been sitting in protest there for two months now. However, this is the first time that Delhi witnessed the communal face-off between Hindus and Muslims in a bloodshed manner this Tuesday. The communal violence in the national capital of the county branded for its secular image poses a serious question on the integrity of the nation. The Delhi government and the government at the center were unable to contain the riots from spiraling out of control despite having thousands of Military troops at hand. The scenario clearly displays the inability of the authorities that have been given the duty to safeguard the citizens of the capital.
Another Hindu-Muslim Clash in the face of India’s Secularism
In a country where various religions prosper with individual freedom, the Northeast Delhi riots showed an ugly picture where the Hindu-Muslim enmity was breaking all bounds of Humanity. Streets were filled with mobs that were unabatedly beating the people, wreaking havoc by throwing stones, ravaging shops, and even bashing the journalists who were there to cover the news. The working-class neighborhood in ‘Maujpur’ and ‘Jaffarbad’ area of Northeast Delhi, which was scared to death with the ongoing outside their homes, were left with streets filled with scraps of bricks hurled by the furious groups of residents in and across the area. Muslim homes and shops were targeted by the Hindu mob, who burnt them down. A group of Hindu mob marched up to the top of a Mosque in Ashok Nagar and placed a saffron flag on it, which represents the Hindu right-wing group. The mob vandalized the mosque.
Delhi rocked by deadly protests during Donald Trump’s India visit
Debates continue for who should be held accountable for the ongoing riots which are feared to tarnish the stature of India, which was hailed by the American President a day ago. It’s time to contain the sensitive scenario before India faces more abruption of its Law and Order situation, even before its international image.
