According to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Russian shelling in and around the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Wednesday killed 21 people, including attacks on a hypermarket, a railway station and crossing, a gas station, and residential structures.

According to Zelenskiy’s Telegram message, 48 people were injured. All civilian! The day hasn’t even come to an end! in one spot!” he exclaimed.

“The bloody trail that Russia leaves behind with its shells,” he remarked, referring to the targets.

According to early accounts, a hypermarket was struck as people were finishing their morning shopping, and explosives shook a railway station in the regional city of Kherson, killing 12 people.

Four more individuals were murdered in outlying settlements as a result of attacks from Russian-occupied areas of the Kherson region. Three of them were engineers trying to repair the electrical system after it had been destroyed by Russian airstrikes.

The Kherson hypermarket’s entrance was extensively damaged, and blood and debris were thrown over the ground outside. The fatalities were all either consumers or staff at the store, according to the interior ministry.

“When the enemy can achieve nothing on the battlefield, it strikes at peaceful cities,” Ukrainian military spokesperson Serhii Cherevatyi said.

Kherson is one of four Ukrainian areas that Russia says it conquered in September of last year, but Russia has made no mention of the attacks there. Moscow has repeatedly denied charges that it targeted civilians during its invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

At least two individuals were seen being carried on stretchers through the railway station’s smashed windows. Three female guests reported hiding behind a table to avoid the assailant.

As Kyiv prepares a counteroffensive to retake occupied territory in the Kherson region, Moscow has increased its air strikes against Ukraine in recent days.

In November, Ukrainian soldiers retook Kherson city after almost eight months under Russian captivity. Russian soldiers, on the other hand, just retreated to the opposite side of the Dnipro River, from whence they continued to pound the city.

The city of Kherson will remain under curfew starting Friday night and continuing until Monday morning, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Wednesday, citing “law enforcement” concerns. He didn’t disclose anything else.
