While many of us in America associate the craziness of New Years Eve with Times Square, other places around the world celebrate the holiday in a similar fashion. China’s Shanghai Waterfront is the place to be to ring in the New Year.
This year tragedy broke out, as citizens and tourists in Shanghai tried to gather and get as close to the waterfront as they could. 35 people were killed and 46 were injured in a stampede, which took place at 11:35 p.m. in Chen Yi Square, which is located near The Bund, which runs along the Huangpu River, and leads into a center which is comparable to New York’s Times Square.
The cause of the stampede is still uncertain, but speculations by a witness told the Xinhua News Agency, that he saw coupons being tossed in the crowd which closely resembled money, and that was the reason people went into this manic state.
The citizens who were injured were rushed to the hospital. Officials and medical staff have been having difficulty identifying some of the victims that were trampled to death, and families of those in the area have started to hysterically contact their loved ones to make sure they are ok.
More news regarding the status of those hospitalized will be released, as well as the information about what actually started the stampede will be sought out.
