Sometimes unexpected family nights, hanging out with your siblings, grandparents and parents can actually turn out to be a blast. Skipping your usual Saturday night antics (which involves wedge booties and a box of Franzia) to hang with the fam can be surprisingly fun and relaxing. It’s time to take a break from your busy nightlife once in a while to have some good old-fashioned amusement with the people who knew you when you thought it was a good idea to get pink and green bands on your braces. So here are five things that will make your Saturday family night one for the books.
1) Watch a movie
Nothing is cozier or more relaxing than snuggling up with your entire family on the couch for a nice movie. You’ll laugh together, and you’ll cry together (depending on the movie genre of course). This is a calm way to enjoy being in the midst of your loved ones.
2) Play your favorite board game
Nothing gets more competitive than family board games. From Parcheesi to Monopoly to Mexican Train, that gaming competitiveness inside you (that remains dormant for 90% of the year) is sure to rally. Move aside grandma; the championship title has your name on it tonight.
3) Laugh at home videos
The ultimate kind of bonding comes when siblings gather to watch home videos. Reliving your childhood (and watching your big brother teach you how to ride a tricycle at age 3) is something touching that every family should experience together.
4) Cook dinner together
Impress your family with your newfound cooking skills (living in the real world will do that), and whip up a nice chicken dish with your mom. Let your grandma teach you a thing or two about working in the kitchen (she’s obviously an expert), and then sit down to good company and good food.
5) Break out Catch Phrase
If your board game gets dull (not likely), nothing spells out intense competition like Catch Phrase does. Team up (boys vs girls?) and take turns guessing whatever noun your teammate is trying to describe. Things could get ugly, but what fun is it if they didn’t?
