Fox has officially ordered an untitled action-adventure pilot to a new X-Men Universe series. The new pilot was produced by 20th Century Fox and Marvel Television.
The pilot will follow two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. While they are forced to go on the run from the government, the family joins an underground network of mutants. The family also learns that they have to fight to survive their world of intolerance.
The new pilot will be written and executively produced by Matt Nix. The new series is the second Marvel TV project to go to a network in the Fox family.
The first X-Men Universe series was co-produced between Marvel TV and FX productions. Legion is set to debut on FX on February 8th.
If the pilot is picked up into a series, the series will be the second X-Men based show to be on television. Fox and 21st Century Fox own the exclusive film and TV rights to the X-Men characters and franchise. The companies own the rights due to a longstanding deal with Marvel.
The new Fox project is expected to tie more closely to the X-Men mythos that is laid out by the comic books and feature films.
Noah Hawley, the creator of Legion, discussed with Variety about the new show and how different it was to the comic books. Hawley discussed how in the comics there are a lot of alternative universes and it has allowed him some creative leeway.
Hawley commented that the show is an origin story about the main character David and his experiences. Although he commented that none of the other characters that surround David are from the comic books.
Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jim Chory, and Lauren Shuler Donner are set to executively produce the new Fox pilot. Matt Nix currently serves as a showrunner of new Fox show APB.
