With Tuesday’s trade deadline looming, the Mets are not expected to move their top pitchers.
New York wants to remain in contention come 2019, and the front office understands that the only way that will happen is if they hold onto Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom at the deadline. The Mets want to avoid a rebuild, a process that the organization has come all too familiar with in the past.
The Mets have made some questionable trades thus far, ridding themselves of former All-Stars Jeurys Familia and Asdrubal Cabrera with very little to show for it, but it finally seems as though the execs in charge have their head on straight.
Jacob deGrom has been nothing short of excellent in his 2018 campaign with the club. In 21 appearances on the mound, deGrom possesses a sparkling 1.82 ERA which is good enough for the best in baseball. However, his win total does not reflect this. The two-time All-Star is the victim of a lack of run support, which isn’t all that surprising considering how bad the Mets offense has been this year. On average, the Mets score 3.52 runs per start for deGrom, which ranks third worst in the league behind only Gio Gonzalez and Jose Urena.

Previously, the Mets were said to at least be listening to offers for the two aces as they trade deadline neared, but no team was willing to pay the high asking price for either star.
This season is already lost for the New York Mets, who are currently 4th in the NL East with a 44-59 record, but that doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for next season. The Mets are a young team with lots of talented players who have yet to reach their ceiling, and their ability to produce at baseball’s highest level will only increase with time.
