Twitter Acquires Password Security Startup Mitro

Twitter just acquired Mitro, a password security firm based in New York. Mitro will join Twitter’s New York location and focus on “geo-related projects,” according to a Mitro representative.

Mitro’s password manager records usernames and passwords as you visit new websites and automatically logs you in to sites you have visited before. Mitro also keeps vital information, like driver’s license numbers, safe. Likewise, you can share secure information with whomever you wish through their program.

Mitro will continue to operate as usual, except it will open source its data. Mitro is working with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) to, in their words, transition to “a sustainable, community-run project.”

In a statement, the EFF added, “We’re very pleased to see this happening and will be advising the Mitro team on how best to turn their startup’s code into a sustainable free/open source software project. If their code proves to be secure and popular with the community, we will be advising them on how to create a sustainable home for that infrastructure.”

Earlier this week, Twitter added Madbits, an image search firm.

“Over this past year, we’ve built visual intelligence technology that automatically understands, organizes and extracts relevant information from raw media,” Madbit stated on its website.
