While Obama released his proposal trying to ban bullets used in AR-15 rifles, lawmakers are ready to halt the proposal from being approved. More than 100 Congressmen have already signed a letter opposing the proposal, which bans one of the most used bullets.
A letter written by Congress to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, expresses that this is an impeachment of American’s rights and that, “The ban will interfere with Second Amendment rights by disrupting the market for ammunition that law abiding Americans use for sporting and other legitimate purposes.”
The letter was directed to ATF Director, Todd Jones, whose organization created the controversial proposal, exclaiming that the bullets are dangerous to our society because of their ability to penetrate bullet proof harnesses. This makes it a potential risk for police officers.
Executive Director of the National Association of Police Organizations, William Johnson, told Fox News, “The notion that all of a sudden a new pistol requires banning what had long been perfectly legal ammunition doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to many officers.” His statement expresses the opinions of many police officers who also feel that the bullets should not be banned.
Others in favor of the proposed legislation, such as Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told Fox News, “We understand why law enforcement has always been concerned about the threat of armor-piercing bullets.” He is worried about the potential dangers of the bullets and is pushing to ban this type of ammunition.
While the decision regarding the proposal still remains undetermined, authorities and professionals are going to examine the legislation by reviewing comments from those who it could potentially affect.
