Salmonella is an infection which can lead to some rather unpleasant health consequences. Symptoms of the virus present themselves about 12 to 72 hours after contact with salmonella bacteria and include diarrhea, fever, and cramping. While these symptoms may not seem too severe, individuals who are very young, old or who have weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for severe complications that can lead to hospitalization.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recently issued a public health alert for foods which contain the powder. Whey powder is used in countless food items, including crackers.
FSIS stated:
“The whey powder is an FDA-regulated product that is being voluntarily recalled by the producer, Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI). Additional FSIS-regulated products containing the recalled whey powder may be added to this public health alert as more information becomes available.”
