Rockets Hit American Embassy Compound in Baghdad, Official Says

The incident took place on Sunday. Three rockets struck the American embassy in Baghdad, and they left one person injured.

The official reported the injury as minor, and the person went on with regular duties.

“We are aware of reports of rockets landing in the International Zone,” A State Department spokesman said.

The spokesman never addresses the U.S.A. embassy itself. The State Department never responded when asked about the embassy employees either.

American property in Iraq

“We call on the Government of Iraq to fulfill its obligations to protect our diplomatic facilities,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson used his words wisely, not blaming Tehran for the rocket strike in the Iraqi capital. However, is statement had to a reference to Iranian threats in the area. This was an immediate responsibility for the attack.

The spokesperson said that the security situation is tense. Iranian-backed groups are a threat, and people should remain vigilant. According to the State Department, there have been constant attacks since September. Iran and Iranian-supported militia made over 14 attacks on the American property in Iraq. The attacks are evident.

The spokesperson retreated and said there would not be much coming from the state department concerning the Baghdad security situation.

Michael McCaul said in a tweet he is “closely monitoring reports of a rocket attack targeting the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.”

What Next?

“Violent acts against our diplomatic facilities are simply unacceptable. We must ensure the safety of American diplomats, troops, and other Americans in Iraq.”

The prime minister of Iraq condemned the attack. He said that they order Iraqi forces to search and investigate to prevent such attacks from recurring. He also said that those who launched such rockets would be hunted, arrested, and punished.

“we commit Iraqi government to protecting all diplomatic missions and taking all necessary measures to achieve this.” Adil Abdul Mahdi, the prime minister of Iraq, said.

Strikes launched earlier this month in retaliation to attacks by Iranian-backed Shia militia group had several American military personnel injured.

Location of American Embassy

The U.S.A embassy and several other states at Baghdad’s Green Zone. It is widely seen as one of the safest places despite frequent rocket attacks. It carved out of central Baghdad by USA-led forces after the invasion back in 2003.
