The comedy musical trio formed by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone have started filming a new feature produced by Judd Apatow. Judging from Apatow’s recent tweet, Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie looks to be another hilarious and fun film.

You may remember the Lonely Island from their appearances on Saturday Night Live. The parody group reached heights of success after producing a number of viral music videos that included, “Like a Boss,” “I’m on a Boat,” and “I Just Had Sex.” Their success in music has carried over to three full length albums. In addition to music, the trio has also dabbled in film. 2007 saw the release of Hot Rod, so it’s not the group’s first stint at directing and acting.
The long-awaited Lonely Island film will see Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone writing and co-starring. Two thirds of the group – Schaffer and Taccone – will be directing this time around, while Samberg will be producing.
Sarah Silverman will also be joining the cast as a “sharp and sarcastic” publicist working with Samberg’s character.
The official press release doesn’t tell us much. It only says that the movie will take place “in the world of music.” The Hollywood Reporter, however, has some more plot details to offer. The movie is a parody of other music documentaries, such as Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Katy Perry’s Part of Me.
The story revolves around a rapper – played by Andy Samberg – who becomes distressed after finding out that his album failed miserably. In efforts to revive his career, the rapper turns to his former boy band for a reunion concert.
There’s no release date attached to the project yet, but we can expect nothing short of riotous behavior and music accompanied by a bunch of celebrity cameos.
