Donald Trump has made headlines once again. Though the republican nominee released statements in the past few weeks stating that he would consider softening his policies on immigration, this is no longer the case. According to CNN, Donald Trump is stating that he would not grant amnesty to any undocumented immigrants in the US if he were to be elected president of the United States. This has many questioning whether or not he will be supporting the candidate as he continues to campaign.
Trump gave a speech on Wednesday that has confirmed many of the gray areas of Trump’s policies on immigration. CNN reports that in this speech, Trump said he would not give people living in the United States illegally a chance to gain legal citizenship while he was in office. CNN has released the statements he made.
“For those here illegally today who are seeking legal status, they will have one route and one route only. To return home and apply for re-entry like everybody else under the rules of the new legal immigration system that I have outlined today..People will know that you cant just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized– it’s not going to work that way. Those days are over.”
While many people are not shocked that Donald Trump has chosen this stance on immigration, many thought a change in his policy could be coming soon. According to CNN, the nominee also had a meeting with the president of Mexico. Though all the details of that interaction have not been released, people thought the meeting would allow Trump to soften his negative opinions on the people of Mexico and immigrants from the area. Many are assuming that because of this speech, they can assume the meeting did not go in that direction.
Immigration is a huge part of the United States. The stance the next president takes will influence many families in this nation.
