Giants CB Teddy Williams Steps Away

New York Football Giants cornerback Teddy Williams requested his release from the team.

Most people have never heard such a thing coming from an NFL player before, but Williams has some good reason for requesting his release. Someone in Teddy Williams’s family is going through a health issue and Williams has decided to step away from the NFL for a while as it gets resolved.

The Giants have granted him his release and will continue on their path to avenge last year’s embarrassment of a season.

Williams played his first NFL game in 2012 with the Indianapolis Colts, appearing in seven games but registering no major stats.

He played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, totaling one tackle in three games, and he got two tackles in 7 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014.

Williams spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons in Carolina, playing in all 16 games for the Panthers in 2015, making 13 total tackles, recovering a fumble, and deflecting a pass.

He got his first career interception in ’16, running it back 19 yards.

I don’t think Williams was at all guaranteed a roster spot, so this isn’t all that big of a deal for the Giants for this season.

Williams said he wants to play this year and hopes to play for the Giants, but he doesn’t feel he should be taking up a roster spot that someone else could have at this time.

Not much else is known about the situation, but it goes without saying that everyone hopes the family health issue is resolved and Williams can return to his NFL career as soon as he feels he can. It’s pretty commendable of him to be forthcoming about knowing he can’t assume the responsibility of being an NFL player right now, and stepping away to take care of his family.
