Some people spend their 4th of July eating hot dogs, drinking beer and celebrating the independence of the good old US of A. Though others, every year like a compelling tradition, put aside the norms of celebrating an American holiday and raise their glasses to the thought that, “the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” –Bill Pullman, Independence Day
Independence Day, starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum was released back in 1996. After aliens invade the earth, annihilating major cities and leaving nothing but death in their wake, pilot Steven Hiller (Smith) and scientist David Levinson (Goldblum) embark in an alien spacecraft to the mother ship to give it a cold. By passing a computer virus into the alien system, they save the world and open doors to a second installment to the franchise.
Jeff Goldblum gave an interview to Time Magazine stating, “I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with [Director] Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.”
Goldblum also teased with the idea of another film he was in, you know that one with the dinosaurs, “”Well, people like that Jurassic Park thing, and I think they’re making another which I tell them I’ll be first in line for, but am not in.”
Independence Day 2 is still in the “talking” phase, but having a second film would gleefully add to a July 4th tradition celebrated by many fans. And if you’re not celebrating this, “We ain’t heard no fat lady!” –Will Smith
