Secret Service Director Julie Pierson, recently in the hot seat for failures towards the Presidents safety, has resigned.
During a Congressional hearing on Tuesday, former Director Pierson was questioned about several security breaches, including prostitution allegations that occurred in Colombia back in 2012, and accusations of drunken behavior.
A key factor in the hearing was the recent breach to the White Houses when Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, jumped the White House fence, infiltrated the mansion, rumbled with a Secret Service officer before being stopped at the vestibule in the East Room. Concern arose when proper protocol was not carried out correctly concerning unlocked doors that had a muted alarm system; which could have notified security sooner. The President was briefed on the break-in soon after.
Gonzalez faced trial, Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to various charges; including entering a restricted government building with a weapon. A second hearing will be held October 21.
During the hearing, Congress was not aware of a later incident, which occurred in Atlanta at the CDC, where president Obama rode an elevator with an armed operator. Though the operator meant no harm to the President, it was the Secret Services job to ensure his safety and limit firearms around the President. This threat to security was not made known to the president until moments before the information was leaked to the public.
Pierson, a 30-year veteran of the Secret Service, is said not to be the Presidents first choice for Director of the Secret service. The White house had first offered the job to David O’Conner, an agency official who was the head of global security for Bain Capital.
The Department of Homeland security will be running an inquiry for the Secret Service and appoint a panel to evaluate security at the White House. After a poor testimony on Tuesday, Congressreional representatives, Republican and Democrats were out for blood calling for her resignation. Former Director Pierson was the first female Director of the Secret Service.
